September 18

Today is National Respect Day and First Love Day. If you are still in contact with your first love (...and are on good terms ...) you may want to give them a shout-out or hug today.

The rest of us will opt for Respect Day.

Who would you like to offer some additional respect today?

Below are some suggestions on how to go about it:

~ Verbal Ways to Show Respect ~

Listen Attentively
This is perhaps the most important suggestion. Give the person your full attention, make eye contact, and avoid interrupting. Show that you're engaged by nodding, offering verbal affirmations ("I see," "Yes"), and asking clarifying questions. We offer a few more details below.

Use Thoughtful Language
Simple phrases like "please," "thank you," "excuse me," and "I appreciate that" go a long way.

Acknowledge Others' Contributions
Recognize and compliment the efforts of others, their achievements and good ideas. Say things like, "That's a great point," or "I really appreciate your help with that."

Monitor Your Tone and Volume
How you say something can be just as important as what you say. A calm, moderate tone shows respect, while a loud, aggressive, or condescending tone can easily be perceived as disrespectful.

Keep Promises and Be Punctual
Following through on your commitments and being on time for appointments shows that you value the other person's time and trust.

Apologize Sincerely When You Make a Mistake
Taking responsibility for your actions and offering a genuine apology demonstrates humility and respect for the other person's feelings.

Avoid Gossip and Talking Behind Their Back
If you have an issue with someone, address it directly with them, not with others.

~ Non-Verbal Ways to Show Respect ~

Maintain Appropriate Eye Contact
This shows engagement and sincerity. Don't stare, but also avoid constantly looking away, which can signal disinterest or evasiveness.

Open Body Language
Face the person you're speaking with, uncross your arms, and maintain an open posture. This conveys that you are receptive and approachable.

Respect Personal Space
Be aware of personal boundaries and don't stand too close, touch unnecessarily, or lean over someone's space without invitation.

Avoid Distractions
(Put away your phone, close your laptop, and avoid fidgeting or looking at other things when someone is talking to you)
This demonstrates that they have your undivided attention.

Ultimately, showing respect comes down to treating others as you would like to be treated with genuine regard for their individuality and worth.
