Remembering the Animals
Today is September 11, a day that brings up a lot of feelings for people, especially Americans. During the aftermath of September 11, 2001's events, several organizations were involved in animal aid and rescue efforts, primarily focusing on the search and recovery of victims and providing care for displaced animals.
It's estimated that over 300 dogs, alongside their human handlers, participated in the search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero in New York City. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) rescued animals, provided therapy teams for relief workers, and helped with efforts to retrieve pets left behind in evacuated apartments in lower Manhattan. A number of other animal-aid organizations offered their services as well.
The performance of the dogs at Ground Zero drew significant media attention, inspiring dog owners to pursue search and rescue certification and providing a financial boost to some training organizations, according to the American Kennel Club.
The animal aid and rescue efforts after 9/11 demonstrated the crucial role of animals, especially search and rescue and therapy dogs, in the face of tragedy and the dedication of organizations and individuals in protecting and caring for animals in times of crisis.
Fortunately, crises such as 9/11 are the exception, not the rule. And there are innumerable organizations dedicated to animal welfare. Even so, most animal shelters are bursting with unwanted or abandoned pets. That's why we created Fabled Creatures & Endangered Monster Rescue. It's our way of injecting a little levity into the effort of caring for the animals of the world and helping to prevent species extinction.
Every creature sponsored benefits real-world animals in need. For example, if you sponsor a woolly mammoth, proceeds benefit an elephant protection agency. When you sponsor a mermaid, funds are sent in your name to aid manatees. To help children learn about the need for animal care, our program includes the opportunity for school kids to write thank-you notes on behalf of the creatures sponsored. While our approach is fantastical, it deals with a very real issue. Our goal is to help give people a reason to smile while doing some good.
