The 5-day "pumpkin carving" window is opening!
That means it's time to start thinking about what to do with your jack-o-lantern
once its had its big night
The average carved pumpkin will last about 5-10 days before it starts to rot.
Here are some ideas for what to do with them:
Pumpkin Planter
Turn your pumpkin into a unique, temporary planter for fall flowers like mums or pansies. Simply fill the pumpkin with soil and plant your flowers inside.
Decorate It Again
If the pumpkin is still firm, you can turn it around and paint the uncarved side with a new design. You can also use it as a decorative holder for candles or other fall items.
If your pumpkin is still in good condition—meaning there's no mold, soft spots, or signs of decay—you can use the flesh. Remember to cook the pumpkin thoroughly before consumption.
Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
This is the easiest part of a pumpkin to salvage. Wash the seeds, pat them dry, toss with a little olive oil and salt, and roast at 300°F (150°C) for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown. You can also experiment with spices like cinnamon, chili powder, or garlic salt.
Pumpkin Purée
Use the flesh to make a purée for pies, bread, muffins, or soups. Simply scoop out the flesh, roast it until soft, and blend until smooth.
Pumpkin Broth
Boil the cleaned flesh in a pot of water with some vegetables like onions and carrots to create a savory broth.
Pumpkin Dog Treats 🐾
Bake the pumpkin flesh into a simple purée and mix it with oats and peanut butter for a nutritious treat for your canine friend.
Composting and Garden Care
This is one of the most environmentally friendly options. Pumpkins are 90% water, making them an excellent addition to compost piles. Break the pumpkin into smaller pieces and add it to your compost heap. The nutrients will help enrich your soil for next year's garden.
Create a "Pumpkin Patch" for Wildlife
Leave the pumpkin in a secluded corner of your yard for local wildlife, (such as birds, squirrels, deer) to enjoy. Be sure to place it away from your house to avoid attracting unwanted pests.
Dig a Pumpkin Grave
Dig a hole in your garden and bury the pumpkin directly.
This will enrich the soil with nutrients as it decomposes.
